Oh, and that is? I guess  there are some going off right now. In this case it’s a challenge stretching over a month.

Of course, that’s why it’s called a monthly challenge, but then what?

I found this on Instagram thanks to a friend that had started it too. A monthly challenge could really be about anything, to publish a photo each day of a special theme or motif, or answer a question every day about  yourself or some specific area.

This monthly challenge had the tag #TarotMentors and have three specific dates, the 1st, 11th and 21st. What you are supposed to do on June 1st is to pick a tarot deck you wanted to work with, shuffle the cards and pull a card. This is a mentor card, a card that contain a special lesson or message for us. It can turn out very differently depending on what kind of person you are, what deck you use and all the other factors that can have a saying in it. The idea is that you are to work with this card until June 11th, then you pick a new mentor card for a 10-day period. I might add that you can pick a card yourself, instead of the random choice, maybe you have some sort of “stalker” card and want to have an idea of what it has to tell you, take your chance.

But what? Are you just supposed to sit there with a card, one and the same, to meditate, think and try to understand what it want to tell you for 10 days?!

No, each day, or at least a couple of times during these days, you are supposed to take out your mentor card, put it back in the deck you are using, shuffle the cards until you are satisfied, and then look it up. You turn the cards face up just to make it easier, and search the deck until you find the mentor card, pick that out and the two cards that are beside it on either side. These two neighboring cards are cards that together with the mentor card will give some extra information for the lesson or message that you need to deal with. And this is what I’m planning to do, hopefully with one every day if nothing else happens.

This is what I’ve got so far, just on the second day, so… my mentor card is the 10 of Air from Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert.

Gaian Tarot #TarotMentor

June 1, 2017 Gaian Tarot

Tonight I pulled my mentors card for the 10 days to come, it became the Ten of Air from the Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert. What would it like to make me think about really? This isn’t the typical RWS picture with someone on the ground with the 10 swords sticking out their body, instead you see an evening or morning sky where the sun is low outside the picture and it colors the clouds in shades of yellow and pink. Over this picture there is a V-formation of geese, forming that familiar plow, and they look like silhouettes.

Air for me is the element of thoughts, ideas, and the intellectual areas really. It has the not so positive sides too of course, to not thinking things through or using words to hurt or harm or cause problems. Communication is important, but sometimes you have to broaden your horizons with it too, not stay put in one place. Get some perspectives on where you are and where you are heading, not stay on the ground and put your head into the nearest bush and pretend that the world doesn’t concern you.

June 2, 2017

The cards flanking the mentor card today is The Fool and Seven of Fire. Something that deals with starting something new or finding a new path and something that seem to be about creating, to shape or re-shape something.

The Fool card is in some ways a traditional RWS card. The stick with that bundle on it, that you see the person standing higher up, but then it differs. This is clearly a girl or young woman and she’s standing looking out over the landscape that spreads out below, fully aware of the fact that it’s steep here, even though grass is softer than the cliffs and rocks. Instead of a dog it is a fox and swallows darting around like acrobats in the air. A river winds its way and show that even if we have some sort of goal set in our minds, maybe the way there isn’t as straight as we would like or wish for sometimes. Just like water we might have to take the best way, the one with the least resistance, just to have a chance to get to our destination.

Seven of Fire would in a RWS have been Wands, and had a completely different look. If I don’t remember all wrong, that card has a person standing higher up and seem to be fighting off or challenging some others below, those might not always be visible, but you can see their spears or wands directed towards the person standing higher up on a rock or something. This card is a smith, a female one, standing there hammering on a piece of glowing iron. Something is about to be created, re-shaped, turning to something new out of the old. We can be both the creator and the thing being created, formed after need and desire, formed after life and the experiences we get along the way. The fire is both destructive and creative, the question could be, what is to be created? Are we helping out or just standing there and follow someone else’s direction, being led without any will of our own, or is this my will, what I want and really feel that I want to create? What do I really want? Where do I want to go, what do I want to create, achieve?

So there hasn’t been much written by me lately, again I might add. But the funeral of my uncle is over with and our warmer days seems to have gone into hiding too. We even had some snow late last night and some of it was still here when we woke up. Colder weather so nothing unusual, typical May here.

Beltane then, I guess I don’t have to write so much about it really, there are so many people who are better at that who have already done so, Google is a great help for it. For once the weather was really great, sunshine, a little chill in the air but nothing you can’t find clothes for and me and daughter got on our bikes and even found a fire burning, and lots of people already there celebrating or just being there because that is what you do on that day. I wasn’t much different when I was a kid, it was fun but nothing I really knew the reason for, it was just a tradition. I didn’t go into any deeper aspects of Beltane with my daughter, just some interesting to know stuff why fires are lit, to have good crops later and that the animals would live and prosper. We had some fun at least, found some people we knew and talking some and then home and get a cup of tea and something to eat. I have some photos further down of that evening.

I found a spread for Beltane that I would have loved to try out then, but since I didn’t look at my e-mails earlier I missed it. It is from LoveDove Tarot and this is my interpretation of it with Gaian Tarot.

Beltane Goddess Mojo Tarot

Beltane Goddess Mojo Tarot

1. This symbolises your Chi/Life force right now. This is what your energy is tied up in or how it currently expresses itself.

The Emperor/The Builder

It is building, creating, finding ways of building my home, family and what to do about our future. And I think that sometimes I get so caught up in the details that I miss out on the full picture around me, the whole of my existence, my life. I have a home, fine, I have a lovely daughter and wonderful mum and younger brother. That is also great so that is not anything I have to put any major energy into. But I get caught up in the smaller things that is important in one way or another, but maybe not helping me along, getting me out there and do something more. And at the same time I love doing those little small things that might not make a difference to anyone else but me or those around that know/see the difference or understand what it is all about.

2. This card symbolises the blessing that is there for you to invoke on Beltane. This is Fire from Heaven but can sometimes come in a very different and non-fiery form. Either way, if it does look more like a challenge, it will be something that will unblock your Chi flow.

Three of Air

Books, pencils, tarot decks, oracle ones, time and space, writing and getting caught up in the words that either comes as a previous thought or just flows from your fingers without really making a stop at your conscious part of the brain. This isn’t very fiery, as in making things like running or creating things in more of moving around ways. So I don’t know if this is to be seen as a challenge or something else, just doing something that would be a blessing for me. Be creative in a way that suits me better than some other ways perhaps. Writing, using words, pictures, photos, having my own space where I create whatever comes through my “hands”. Maybe that would also get my Chi flowing again, getting outside finding some inspiration and then finding a quite spot somewhere and write whatever comes to mind. But where am I supposed to go with this? Time will tell.

3. The ‘Fire proof container’ card symbolises an influence in your life that you can harness in order to avoid burnout. It’s a protective energy. It could also symbolize a supportive person or an attitude you need to adopt if one of the court cards are found there.

Nine of Water

A woman standing in a cave with her arms stretched out welcoming, or hailing, the incoming light, all the elements are there from rock, to water, air and the warmth of the sun. The importance of being in balance with myself and my surroundings. I need to get out in the world, but I have to take it one step at a time and feel grounded and centered in myself, know that I can get in touch with Mother Earth and Father Sky anytime I need it and wherever I am at the time.

4. The Fire (if invoked) will burn away whatever is symbolized by this card, in order to free up more of your Life force energy.

Three of Earth

There is friendship and joy, the joy of doing things together, sharing the special times with creating and taking care of the blessings we have. So what is to be burnt away here? Friendship? Creating things with others? No, not really that, there is something else here, more of burning away the idea that I will wait for other people with similar interests to share moments like these with. Hm, how will I put this so it will come out right? I can’t sit around waiting for people to come and invite me to things like these, or finding them somewhere close, it would be better to start out on my own to begin with and then see what will happen. If there is people around who shares my ideas they will come, but if not at least I have done something myself. And that this might not be my best, working with herbs and such. There are so many other things to do besides that even if I find it interesting.

5. The Fire (if invoked) will feed this element in your life. This is where you should focus more effort in the next couple of months.

Elder of Earth (King)

An elderly woman at her spinning wheel out in the yard with fruit trees and a deer in the background. Is this what I should focus more on? Creating something, feeling like I’m doing something for myself and nature, creating a foundation for things to come. Preparing the material needed and just feel grounded and knowing the wheel is turning, ever turning to bring us further on with our threads of fate and life. This is something that will be interesting to find out, what and where?

6. +7. These two cards expand on card 5.

Eight of Air + Justice

So what are these two expanding on for what I need to focus on in the next couple of months? First card is a group of people sitting outside listening to the man who is holding the talking stick and perhaps he is teaching a lesson, or just explaining things, sharing his viewpoint on something they have been talking about. The other card is a man dressed in loose fitting clothes holding a burning heart in his right hand and a feather in his left. He is standing above running water with several animals around him and some beautiful flowers. He is balance between heart and mind, nature and humanity, Heaven and Earth. Keep the balance both inside and outside. Be willing to listen to what is said around you in the times to come, there are many wise words hidden and if you are willing to listen and wait for your turn to talk there is much to discover. During this time find your balance and get in touch with nature, listen to what it has to say to you while you find your inner balance between heart and mind.

Bottom card: Elder of Fire, Top card: Two of Water

This first photo was taken on a walk on my way into the central parts of town and I couldn’t resist taking it, so special. The three after that are taken at Beltane and the photo that looks like the ground is on fire is actually taken by my 8 year old daughter. A friend of ours said that with a little imagination you could see the head of a Chinese dragon, and I can only agree. Can you see it?

The four cards after that is taken on May 1st when I was taking a walk around where I live, I think I found a new friend! It looked like a snake peaking up along the tree, a true natures art. And the last photos are taken at my dads childhood home.

These are taken some days ago, been home with daughter who catched a bad cold and been home for three days. I really hope, and so does she, that we can go to the fire festival tomorrow. Nothing big but it’s become sort of a tradition now since this will be the third year we go. There is a walk you can do with kids 8 and older and it is about the norse gods involved usually. Then later it is a group that performs with fire and that part usually is something very special. Earlier years they’ve had a big snow pile with tunnels going through, and yes they make sure they are safe, so children can go there and have sort of a cave in the middle. This year might not be one of those since there’s been so little snow. If you want to see a clip you can visit Hägnan and click on the video further down. The place is an outdoor museum with old houses and they show people what it was like living around the times when the houses were built. Lots of fun for kids and adults. This festival is sort of an early celebration of Imbolc for me, with the fire and all. A sign and celebration of the returning light.

Back to the photos then. It was pretty cold the day I took them, but “only” -20C/-4F but not wearing anything on my hands again I’m feeling my fingers much faster now and they don’t really like the cold without feeling a little stiff and swelling some. But not using my brain I can only blame myself. Have to remind myself to protect my hands better now, I want to be able to use them for photography for many years to come, and writing, drawing and whatever else you use your hands for without really thinking about it. So here they are, those I think got really good.

So, my plans for continuing with the exercises in the book I started with, didn’t exactly happen the way I wanted. But life doesn’t happen as one wish all the time we find out with time and experience. This time the intervention was named stomach flu… oh yes, that wonderful thing that turns you into something with no energy and a brain that has some similarities with a zombie. At least when first daughter gets it and our needed sleep was interrupted several times during the early Tuesday morning. Tired beyond belief we sat there most of that day not doing more than necessary. Deciding she would stay at home Wednesday too just to give her tummy a chance to get back to normal, sensitive as it can be a little now and then. So on Wednesday she felt better, started to get some real food down but still not quite so well as one would’ve wished. And then this generous little soul shared her flu with me so on Thursday I felt like a wreak with muscles hurting, head hurting and not in the mood for anything. My beloved mother came to my rescue and took care of my daughter during the day so I would have some rest and she wouldn’t worry about me all the time. So my day could be spent dozing, watching some tv and just exist. It was a gift that is worth more than any money in the world. Sorry to say, but grandma was given that loving “gift” too, but she’s feeling better already. But if my daughter felt anything like I did, I can understand it took her four days to feel ok again.

Today, Saturday, I’m feeling better too, but my energy level isn’t what I wish it was, and some food and thoughts of food still makes me feel a little off. Not planning any fantastic dinners or something. And my plans for celebrating Imbolc went out the window. I ended up with some candles and thinking of what it represents in my world. Oh, if you wish to read some more about Imbolc I found this one at Patheos interesting too. How it can be so big differences depending on where in the world you live and what it looks like outside. Some parts, even around the northern hemisphere, starts to show signs of spring, but up here in my area we have longer days but still lots of snow left and that sort of spring where the trees starts to bud and you can start to see the first green straws of grass and perhaps the earliest flowers wont happen until late April and probably not until May. Depending on how early it becomes that is… Today it’s snowing slightly so it’s not any signs of  spring really, but I can feel it inside of me and see that it will come closer soon. Visited a fire festival recently and that became sort of the celebration I couldn’t do the day I had hoped for. If you look at this link from Youtube you can see the performance they had for 2012 and some other things going on like a fairytale walk with the gods of Ásatrú and returning of the missing runes, sled rides, a celebration that it might have looked like long time ago, the snow and other fun things going on. The location for this? Gammelstad, outside Luleå in Sweden

I had another plan for this week too, tarot related again, but it was an interesting webinar with James Wells and Leaving the Stories that Binds us. He had it on the Gaian Tarot Circle and it was really interesting to follow. I was interrupted halfway or so but thought I could go back to it later that evening. That didn’t happen as I found out, but it’s still there for me to listen to when I log into the forum again. I really like his way of working with tarot and his thoughts.

Oh well, daughter coming home for some lunch, and bringing a friend along so I better get that soup heated for them. And maybe there will be something for me also, feeling my tummy reminding me about that simple rule about eating small portions but a little more often until everything in the body is back to normal again.
